Dean's Message
A Welcome from the DeanWelcome to the College of Engineering at Eastern Institute of Technology, Ningbo.
Engineering is the art and science of transforming knowledge into solutions for the real world. From the steam engine and electrification to computing and the internet, major advances in engineering have repeatedly reshaped human civilization. Today, the convergence of advanced materials, clean energy, artificial intelligence, and the life sciences is bringing engineering to another historic turning point. Future engineers must not only understand physical principles and master advanced technologies; they must also be able to identify consequential problems, cross disciplinary boundaries, and translate ideas into working systems.
EIT is rooted in Ningbo’s powerful manufacturing base and situated within the dynamic innovation ecosystem of the Yangtze River Delta. Across the University’s six strategic areas, the College of Engineering serves as an essential bridge connecting fundamental science, information technology, and industrial application. Our work spans autonomous systems, new energy and advanced materials, intelligent manufacturing, human health, and sustainability, bringing together mechanics, mechanical engineering, materials science, biomedical engineering, environmental engineering, and artificial intelligence.
As a young institution, we are not constrained by historically established departmental boundaries. This gives us the freedom to organize education and research around important problems, assemble teams across disciplines, and pursue solutions of genuine originality and impact. Our aspiration is not to replicate a conventional engineering school, but to create a modern and forward-looking model of engineering education and research that is distinctly EIT.
In education, we want our students to do more than solve problems that have already been defined. We want them to discover problems worth solving. They will learn not only in classrooms, but also through research, design, experimentation, fabrication, industrial engagement, and repeated iteration. We encourage them to reason from first principles, remain curious, challenge assumptions, lead and collaborate effectively, and recognize engineering’s responsibilities to society, safety, the environment, and human well-being.
In research, publications and theoretical advances are essential, but they are not the final destination. Enduring engineering innovation must travel from scientific discovery to enabling technology, from computational methods to engineering software, and from laboratory prototypes to real-world deployment. We will connect fundamental research, engineering development, and industrial translation through open collaboration with leading universities, research institutions, and industry partners around the world.
Building a world-class College of Engineering requires exceptional faculty, creative students, outstanding engineering professionals, and partners who share our ambitions. We invite those who are curious, courageous, and committed to excellence to join us on the banks of the Yong River—to discover important problems, create transformative technologies, and engineer the future.
